What To Read Wednesday: Cross Stroke by Elizabeth Hartey; Sports Romance

CROSS STROKE by Elizabeth Hartey
On the Edge, Book #1

Tracey…
One night left my heart shattered and my reputation ruined, and now my only hope is to transfer to another university far from home. Although I’m a champion figure skater and am used to succeeding, I can’t dump the burden of distrust and intimacy I’m carrying.

But when I literally crash into the cocky captain of the hockey team, sparks fly, and the attraction is as undeniable as it is unwanted.

No way is this arrogant hottie the one to help me move past my fears. Or is he…?

Dak…
Overwhelmed with guilt and remorse, I can’t forget the tragic accident that killed my first love. To avoid ever feeling that kind of agonizing loss again, I vow to stick with one-night stands with every puck bunny who glides my way and focus on keeping my position on the hockey team.

But after I meet a feisty figure skater and am then thrown together with her as a lab partner, I find I want to melt the icy walls we’ve built around our hearts.

If we don’t strangle each other first.

Available in ebook (Kindle Unlimited) and paperback formats!

EXCERPT:
Tracey

The hockey player zips past me again. The wind of his speed sweeps across my face. As Bob said, this session is almost over, but I only wanted a few minutes to get the feel of the ice anyway. However, when I take the first stroke on the ice, this is not what I had in mind. The feel I was interested in wasn’t the one where my ass hits the frigid, unforgiving surface right in front of a pair of black hockey skates.

The skater slides to an abrupt halt to avoid running over me, his sharp blades spraying me with cold shavings. In my frantic state of synaptic overdrive, I forgot to remove my glittery purple skate guards.

“Yeah, those don’t work too well on the ice. You might want to remove them before trying to stroke.” I look up up up until I reach the face of the taunting skater.

Yowsa. His ice blue eyes shimmer like lasers right through the Plexiglas visor of his hockey helmet. Strands of sun-kissed streaked hair peek out from his helmet and frame cheekbones, which would be the envy of every Express model. Absurd. No one looks that good in a helmet.

Did he say something about stroking?

My naughty, sex-starved mind drifts for a second to stroking other types of hard surfaces, the kind that could melt cold ice and my bones. Seems the blood has no problem reaching lower regions of my body now.

Stop it.

Right. Sworn off sex. Forever. Well, at least until I can let someone get that close again, if I ever can.

But when Hottie McHot wiggles his fingers and stretches his hand out a little further toward me, it’s like he has a front row seat to the opening night of my porno imagination. Although my ass has lost all sensation from its imminent fusion to the icy surface, I can feel the warm blush creeping up my neck and face.

When he moves back to Rocky Harbor, Maine, he thinks his life is about to turn predictable…until he meets Mackenzie Pratt. Her smart mouth and quirky attitude make him want to see how wild they can get together.

As their relationship begins to creep from the bedroom and dangerously close to her heart, their casual trysts develop into something more—something neither expected.

EXCERPT:
At the wedding, he’d watched her dance with the women on the dance floor, the men safely ensconced by the bar or lounging around the tables, making idle conversation while checking out their dates or want-to-be hook-ups on the dance floor. Blake didn’t voice his claim on Mackenzie, knowing his brothers would razz him and intentionally find one of their buddies to hit on her.

Instead, he played his cool card, sneaking up behind her and grabbing her hand in his, throwing her off balance before she could refuse his offer without looking like a fool. She didn’t say anything during their dance and did her best to look every which way but at him.

When the song ended, she’d slipped away and avoided the dance floor. Or rather, avoided him.

It wasn’t until the end of the night, once the crowd had gone, leaving only family behind, that he’d found her coming out of the ladies room.

“Stalk much?”

“A little.” He stepped closer, pinning her against the wall with his gaze. “I want to kiss you.”

Mackenzie seemed as startled with his candidness as he was. They hadn’t carried on a conversation that lasted more than fifteen seconds. He knew little about her other than she was gorgeous, had a smile that lit up the entire room—even though it had yet to be directed at him—had eyes as dark as ebony and skin as white as freshly fallen snow.

Hell, he didn’t do poetic crap, yet the images and analogies sprang to the forefront of his mind. And something else was about to spring as well. Blake had inched forward, his thighs pressing against hers. She was tall in her sexy as sin shoes, her eyes nearly even with his.

“What if I don’t want to kiss you?”

“Then don’t.” Blake leaned forward, eliminating the distance between them and touched his lips to hers.

Sweet like chocolate and fruity like the pink wine she’d been sipping. Blake knew better than to push his luck, but she’d smelled like freaking heaven’s bakery. Slowly and deliberately he’d inched his hands up her back and tangled them in her hair.

EXCERPT:
“Come with me. I want to show you something.”

“Sounds mysterious.”

“I will admit I was keeping this a secret, but I’ve made an executive decision to break with Handymen tradition.”

“What will Lacey think?”

“Let’s not go there.” He brought her upstairs, to the room that used to be the master bedroom, the one where several crew members stowed their belongings most days. Michael opened the door. At the far end of the empty room sat a large object, covered in a long tarp. “I’ve been working on something for you.”

“You mean other than renovating my house?”

He grinned. “Remember those old family photos Lacey borrowed from you?”

“Yeah. She said they wanted to include a montage of old pictures in the show introduction.”

“That might have been a slight fabrication. I just needed a way to get some photos from you. Anyway, I was saving this for the big reveal, but I think I want to show you now.” He grabbed the edge of the tarp and pulled, revealing the object hidden beneath it.

It was an old wooden ladder, one he’d found months ago at a salvage yard. He’d decided to repurpose it, turning it into a set of frames for the old photos they’d borrowed. Faces now smiled out from the six gaps between the rungs. Nonna Olivia hugging two blond children, Emily and her brother. Nonna Olivia and her husband on their wedding day. Six photos in total, all part of the heritage Emily so treasured. He hoped she’d like the rustic look of the ladder. Rather than sanding and painting it, he’d left it rough and worn, so that it looked as if it might have been sitting in Nonna Olivia’s toolshed, just waiting to be used. All Michael had done was affix the appropriate hooks and backings and had blown all the photos up to sizes that would fit the spaces.

Emily gazed upon her grandmother’s face. Her chest heaved. She blinked once, then twice. All at once, big, fat tears began to roll down her cheeks. “Michael, it’s…”

“I hope you don’t mind I used the photos. I thought it might be nice for you to have mementos of your grandmother in the finished store.”

“Oh.” Her hand covered her mouth but it shook so much she was unsuccessful at covering her open mouth.

“I hope you like it. You’ve had a shitty week and I thought you could use a pick-me-up. I was supposed to keep quiet about it, so maybe you could keep it under your hat until—”

Emily threw herself at him and wrapped her arms around his torso, cutting off his words and his breath. Only when he hugged her back did he realize how hard she was quivering.

She wasn’t just crying about the old photos.

“It’s okay, Em. Let it out, sweetheart.”

The collar of his shirt grew wet but he didn’t care. Wardrobe had tons of shirts. Besides, she felt good in his arms, all soft and warm. He rubbed her shoulders and the back of her waist, exploring and familiarizing himself with her luscious body. He breathed, drinking in her scent. His nasal cavities had never known such bliss. It was like that first clear breath after a long period of congestion. His fingers were pretty happy too, enjoying the give of her womanly body. It was all he could do not to slide them down, cup her sweet ass, and pull her up against him.

Just not while she was crying over another man.

She lingered in his arms and he did nothing to push her away. In fact, it surprised him how badly he wanted to keep her there, so much so that when Emily finally extricated herself, he wanted to pull her back into his embrace. Instead, he wiped her cheeks of the remaining tears.

“The makeup ladies are going to kill me for making you cry.”

It might have been his imagination, but her tears made her eyes appear even greener. In fact, her entire face seemed a riot of tempting color. Each shade called to him. The crushed roses in her cheeks. Her strawberry lips, so plump and moist. Even the doeskin brown of her freckles fascinated him to no end. He wanted to count them, to kiss and mark them all.

Kissing her made a whole lot of sense right now. Kissing her senseless seemed even better.

Emily’s eyes widened. Her lips parted in invitation. Michael paused, knowing it was wrong, even though every raised hair on his arms told him it was right.

As he debated with himself for a split second, she brushed her lips against his. It was quick and soft, hunger masquerading as something platonic. Even though a spectator might have called it a friendly kiss, he knew the truth. As brief as it may have been, he felt her yield to him, even if just a little.

From the startled look in her eye, Emily knew it too.

She took a step back. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”

“You’re right. I should have been the one to do it.” Michael licked his lips. “Your lips really do taste like strawberries.”

“Michael, I can’t.”

“I think you just did.”

“You know what I mean.” She waved her hand between their two torsos. “This. I can’t do this.”

“What? Point at my chest?”

“You’re teasing me.”

“Maybe a little. Listen, Em, I understand. As unexpected as that kiss was, as much as I want to taste your lips again, I know it’s too soon.”

“It’s too much, too soon.”

He reached for her hand. “I get it. It’s okay.”

“Thank you.”

“But that doesn’t mean I won’t be spending all my waking hours waiting for the moment I can make it happen again.”

“Michael.”

“Don’t worry. I’d never force the matter. Besides, I enjoyed having you thrust yourself at me.”

“Are you ever going to let me live it down?”

“Not in this century, sweetheart.”

MEET THE AUTHORS
APRYL BAKER: So who am I? Well, I’m the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn’t love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.

Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there’s always someone to tell your mama you were seen kissing a particular boy on a particular day just a little too long. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled “Lord Margrave’s Deception.” I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.

Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my niece and nephew and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce…lol.

I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.
